Fall Leaf Cleanup in Knoxville: What to Do Before the First Frost

Knoxville's first frost usually lands somewhere between late October and early November, and the oaks and maples in Halls and Powell drop most of their leaves in the three or four weeks around it. What you do with those leaves in that window decides how your lawn looks next April.

Why a leaf mat hurts a fescue lawn

Most lawns in Knox County are tall fescue. Fescue does its real growing in the fall, when the days cool off and the summer heat lets up. It's also the only time of year overseeding actually takes.

A layer of wet leaves blocks light, holds moisture against the crown, and gives fungus a place to start. Leave a mat down for a few weeks and the grass underneath goes yellow, then thin, then bare. Those are the spots that come back as crabgrass and clover next summer.

When to clear them

Waiting for the last leaf to fall means the first ones have been sitting for a month. Two or three passes through the season beat one big cleanup in December.

• Early to mid October: mow a little shorter than usual and mulch the first light drops right into the lawn. Fescue handles a thin layer of chopped leaves fine.

• Late October through mid November: this is peak drop. Clear the lawn every week or two so nothing sits long enough to smother the grass. Rake out beds and along fence lines, where leaves pile deepest.

• After the trees are bare: one final cleanup, then a last mow. Gutters and downspouts should be cleared now too, before winter rain.

Mulch, pile, bag, or haul?

Mulch them in. If leaves cover less than half the lawn, run the mower over them a couple of times. The pieces break down and feed the soil. Once you can't see grass through the layer, mulching stops working and starts smothering.

Rake to the street. Inside Knoxville city limits, the city vacuums loose leaves raked to the curb, with crews coming through about every four weeks in November and December. That's a long wait for a pile that keeps growing, so plan on raking out between visits. Most of Halls and Powell sit outside the city line in unincorporated Knox County, so there's no leaf truck coming there.

Bag them. Bagged leaves go out with regular trash in most of the county. It's the slowest option by a wide margin. A quarter-acre lot under mature oaks can fill 30 to 40 bags.

Haul them off. If you have a wooded edge on the property, leaves can be blown into the tree line to break down on their own. If not, off-site haul-away is the cleanest finish.

What it costs to have it done

Don't skip these two

Gutters. Leaves that miss the lawn land in the gutters. Clogged gutters overflow at the foundation and freeze in January. Clear them once the trees are bare.

Beds and shrubs. Leaves packed under shrubs hold moisture against the stems and hide voles. Rake beds out, then top off mulch if it's thin.
