Shrub Trimming in Tennessee: Spring or Fall?

Timing a shrub trim wrong can cost you a whole season of blooms, or worse, leave fresh growth exposed right before a hard freeze. The right timing comes down to one question: does this shrub bloom on old wood or new wood?

The Short Answer: It Depends on the Shrub

Shrubs fall into two camps. Some set next year’s flower buds shortly after they finish blooming this year. Cut them in fall or winter and you cut off next year’s flowers. Others bloom on new growth put on earlier the same year, and those respond well to a late-winter cut.

Spring-Blooming Shrubs: Trim Right After They Bloom

Azaleas, forsythia, lilac, and spirea all set their flower buds for next year shortly after this year’s blooms fade. The window to trim them is narrow: right after flowering, in late spring or early summer. Wait until fall or winter and you’ll cut off buds that were already set for next spring.

Summer and Fall-Blooming Shrubs: Trim in Late Winter

Crape myrtle, butterfly bush, and panicle hydrangea bloom on new growth, so cutting them back in late winter, before spring growth starts, encourages fuller, healthier blooms rather than costing you flowers.

Evergreens and Foundation Shrubs (Boxwood, Holly, and Similar)

These are more forgiving. Light shaping works nearly any time of year except the hottest weeks of summer. The one window to avoid is the four to six weeks before your first fall frost. New growth triggered by a late trim won’t have time to harden off before cold weather hits.

One Rule That Applies to Every Shrub

Never do a hard cut-back in late fall, regardless of species. Pruning stimulates tender new growth, and that new growth won’t survive a Knoxville cold snap. If a shrub needs a serious reduction, wait until it’s fully dormant, typically December through February.
